Hi, Etc.
This is a quickly thrown up site devoted to explaining pop culture lyrics. Sounds simple enough, right? Yeah, well. It isn't. A couple years ago, when One Week came out, I was, as the token Canadian in most people's social groups, being asked constantly about certain references in the song (Swiss Chalet is very good fastish food chicken). So I'm putting up this site as a glossary of pop culture references; the idea in songs like One Week, or La Vie Bohême, or more recently, in cases like the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge, people can take songs and find all those obscure references in one place. The site title, btw, comes from a Mr. Cranky review of Moulin Rouge; in discussing the use of pop songs in the musical, he states: The effect of all this is that just about any moron in the audience can rightly claim, "I recognize that!" Well, of course you do, you pop-culture whore. And of course, if we're going to sit here and dissect those same damned songs.... |
