Protecting Your Edge No matter how careful you are, there are some things in life that just can’t be controlled. Knowing that you and your family will be protected if anything does happen can help you sleep better at night. Cingular gives you the flexibility to design the coverage level that works for you:

Basic Group Life Insurance
All Cingular employees are automatically enrolled in basic group life. If you die, basic group life pays a benefit to your beneficiaries equal to one year of your pay, including average bonuses and commissions. Cingular pays 100% of the premium.

For example, if you earn $30,000 annually, you have life insurance coverage of $30,000. If you have a terminal illness, you may be able to receive some life insurance benefits before your death.

Supplemental Group Life Insurance
You also can enroll in supplemental group life in multiples of your annual pay—1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 times your annual pay. The maximum coverage amount allowed is $4 million.

Dependent Life Insurance
You can add coverage for your spouse or Registered Domestic Partner and/or child(ren). You are the beneficiary if your spouse, Registered Domestic Partner, or child dies. Benefit amounts you can select are:

  • Spouse or Registered Domestic Partner—$5,000, $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000
  • Child(ren)—$2,000, $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000

Supplemental AD&D Insurance
We offer you the option to enroll in Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in multiples of your annual pay—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 times your annual pay.

AD&D insurance pays a full benefit if you die in an accident. If you lose a limb or your sight as a result of an accident, the plan pays all or part of the full benefit, depending on the severity of the loss.

Short-Term Disability
Short-Term Disability (STD) may cover all or part of your salary if you’re sick or injured and can’t perform your current job.

If you have an illness that lasts longer than five days, STD pays 100% for two weeks, times your years of service, and 60% thereafter. The maximum benefit is 26 weeks. For an employee with eight years of service this means the first 16 weeks of STD would be paid at 100%, the remaining 10 weeks at 60%.

Long-Term Disability
You’re also covered for basic Long-Term Disability (LTD) after the 26 week STD benefit payment period ends.

  • Basic coverage pays 50% of your income if you can’t work for an extended period.
  • You can choose to buy an extra 20% of coverage to protect up to 70% of your income. The basic coverage level is provided with no monthly employee cost. You pay the optional buy-up coverage with after-tax dollars. This means the benefit won’t be taxable if you ever need to use the benefit.
  • You will remain on LTD for the first three years if you can’t perform your current job.
  • After three years, you’re covered if you can’t perform any job.
  • If you meet the definition of LTD, you will be eligible to continue healthcare benefits under the Cingular benefits program.

Transitioning to the Edge
If you’re on STD as of the Cingular transition date, you’ll transition to the new Cingular STD benefits on the day you move to the Cingular benefits plan.

Special transition rules will apply to employees under a STD benefit period of longer than 26 weeks.

If you’re currently receiving LTD payments, (you’re in a benefits pay status), you’ll stay with your parent company LTD benefits and will not transition to Cingular employment or benefits.
