Merge Design

In spring of 2001, I was brought in by Merge Design, a print design firm to help them fulfill a contract they had for a full package of services (brochure, intranet site, etc.)

While there, I did an intranet site for Cingular (their client's client). The site needed to be done in almost pure HTML; there is some use of style sheets in here, but it is limited; the client specifically wanted something that used as little that was browser dependant as possible. If you are familiar with cross-browser specifications, upon seeing the design, you will understand this was a hard thing to do; however, the final design I created works in all 4.0 and up browsers on both Macs and PCs. What I did:

  • HTML:
    • Extensive HTML to make certain that design is 'unbreakable' cross-platform
    • Documentation of style sheets, some tutoring of designers on style sheet use for conformity, speed of page generation
  • Content:
    • Edited and returned copy to project manager for approval by customer; dealt with standard copyediting conventions and maintained log of changes
    • Monitored for 'brochureware' speak, and made sure that links that refer to 'page 10 of this brochure' actually pointed to proper HTML pages
  • Javascript:
    • Mouseovers
    • Tightly linked 'pop-up' window using frames (Maintaining your edge, then 'medical options comparison chart')
